Hello Subscribers!
I hope everyone had a safe and Happy Canada Day. It is one of my favourite holidays of the year. It represents the beginning of summer, my favourite time of year. It is also a day that is spent with family and friends enjoying, hopefully, a beautiful sunny day. Every year we have attended the festivities down at Fairy Lake. We have survived hot scorching days with lots of sunscreen on and we have braved some rainy cold days as well, but we have never missed one. It is a great opportunity to run into people that you haven’t seen over the winter months and catch up on summer plans. Everyone is in great spirits patronizing red and white, music is playing, kids are playing baseball (first year for our son), and the beer tent is packed with the Lions serving up a Canadian tradition of cold beer. I was down there again this year for the traditional Jr.Rookie Baseball tournament that our son played in and then spent time while he partook in all the different activities. After that we headed over to Main Street and then finally back home to relax before heading to family who back onto Bayview Park for the fireworks display.
I feel like I say this every newsletter that the past month has been busy, probably a statement true to all of us these days. Like many of you June is busy wrapping up the end of school year for the kids, organizing them for the summer, whether it is camps, holidays, part-time jobs etc. Meadowbrook P.S. had their annual Fun Fair, which I have organized since my son started there two years ago along with the wrapping up the last pizza/sub lunch for the year. The Fun Fair was another great success with the Police Dogs and Handlers doing a presentation, the jumping castles, cotton candy, BBQ, raffles and much more. The kids enjoy this immensely and you can see it on their faces, which makes it all so worthwhile. It was sad for me as I have enrolled my son at Mazo de la Roche next year, but I take comfort in the fact that I will continue on the parent council as a community citizen representative. It will not allow me to vote on issues, but it does allow me to stay connected with my local school. As a councillor, I think this is a perfect opportunity to keep that connection to the community all year round, not just as public figure in attendance at events. I will be looking into this as a way to connect with our other two schools as well if elected.
This past month, I have attended workshops, Committee of the Whole and Council meetings in preparation in the event I am elected. There are many issues that will continue forth in the next term, and it is imperative that I am knowledgeable on where issues are presently at come the next term. Some of these include the Old Town Hall renovations, which may get the final stamp of approval on its fate just prior to the end of this term. That being said, there will be still significant decisions to be made. The Yonge/Davis corridor will be a very important part of next term as well with this project going on for the next few years. As decisions have to be made on a number of issues in the years to come, it is imperative that your members of council represent our towns demographic in a balanced manner. It is also imperative that as a representative to our ward, that they do indeed represent the interests of this part of the community. It perhaps isn’t easy to take a stand and to go against a staff recommendation or other councillor’s views, but it is the duty and responsibility of that councillor to represent you, the residents of that ward. That is why I do believe that as a resident of Ward 3, who lives and works here in the Ward, I have a vested interest in what affects us directly. At the end of the day, I still live around the corner from you and not on the other side of town.

My upcoming events for the next month will be knocking on doors. I am finishing up my campaign brochure and will be hitting the streets with my sneakers and notepad. I look forward to speaking with you directly and hearing what your interests and concerns are for Ward 3 and Newmarket as a whole.
